Avista pushes back Reardan wind farm construction
Avista will delay construction of a 50-turbine wind farm near Reardan, Lincoln County, until at least 2014, citing the high costs associated with harnessing energy from the wind. Avista had planned to have the farm operating in 2013 so it could qualify for federal and state tax credits, but officials now say the electricity won’t be needed for several more years. This is the second delay for the project, which was first announced in 2008.

Wind Power Industry Standards
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) shoulders the responsibility of defining, reviewing and adopting the wind energy industry standards in the United States. The organization was established in 1974, the time when serious development of wind power generation projects was being considered in the country. Apart from developing domestic standards for the industry, the AWEA also participates in developments of wind energy standards at international level. This helps the United States to keep its share in the foreign market for wind energy project developments.

Wind Turbine Glossary
Air Density: The density of air measured in mass of air per unit volume. It affects the amount of power received by the wind turbine. Anemometer: The device integrated with the body of wind turbine to measure the wind speed. Angle of Attack: The angle formed between the relative air flow and the chord of a blade of the wind turbine.

Wind Turbine Sizes
Wind turbine sizes specify the power range of the machines, usually expressed in the units of kilowatt. In the beginning, the wind turbines with power capacity of few kilowatts were installed at commercial sites. Today, the power range offered by the improved wind turbines has megawatt value as the upper limit.

Wind Farms
The commercial success of wind turbines to produce electricity led to the evolution of wind farms. The collection of numerous wind turbines installed within an extended area of square kilometers is known as wind farm or Wind Park. Connected through a medium voltage, the wind turbines at a wind farm can vary from a small number to several hundreds.

Offshore Wind
Onshore wind technology for generating power from wind has already proved its mettle and it is the offshore wind technology that is adding new dimensions to this clean energy resource. A number of countries, including the USA, the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands and others, are setting up offshore wind farms in order to utilize the power of wind blowing over the ocean surface. The regions, offering limited opportunities for land-based wind power generation, are diverting towards offshore wind development opportunities.
